we made it!  all of our geo-cities projects are complete and ready for our community open house.  tonight from 5-8pm we will have our projects on display in the mpr.  our parents are invited to come see our accomplishments.  there will be a variety of food, entertainment, and booths that showcase what our school has to offer the students of los alisos.  we are all excited and looking forward to the community visiting our amazing school.  go lobos!

on monday, we officially started our 3 weeks of cst review for our math classes.  we are using the smart board for review and practice.  we are covering all the standards that we have learned since the beginning of the school year!  we are also using powerpoint to help us make study cards that we can review to help us prepare for our test.  our trimester 3 projects are also in full work mode.  they are due on may 8 and it looks like all our research and hard work will pay off!  we are already seeing creative math cities and towns that look amazing.  if we were an 1/2 inch tall we would want to live in them! ha ha ha.... once our projects are all complete, we will post them on our project page. to be continued...

after working on our safe house designs using the internet to research bracing and stability, we began construction of the houses today.  in cooperative groups, each group must utilize their knowledge of bracing to construct a mini safe house that can withstand tension and a simulated 7.0 richter scale earthquake.  each group is limited to any mix of 20 items that vary from popsicle sticks, straws, pipe cleaners, and foil pieces.   tape is allowed at 1 yard, along with two rubber bands, 1 yard of tape, and 2 index cards.  this project is challenging! "Earthquake testing"  will be performed next week!  stay tuned...

yay!  We are finished with both ela and math benchmarks.  we have worked hard to prepare for these exams.  next on our agendas is our trimester 3 project!  we just got all of our packets distributed and have begun the draft portion of the assignment.  this trimester we are making geo cities projects that will be showcased at open house.  this project is a math "themed" city where we incorporate three of our 6th grade geometry standards.  We make a miniature community with visible mathematical properties located within the constructed "themed" city.  stay tuned for more updates....! :)

WE are diligently preparing for our unit 7 exam which will be given on our last day before spring break!  We are using our smart board to draw and shade in circles and cylinders.  remembering all of our formulas is tough, but we have printed out a lot of notes and have glued them in our notebooks to use for study preparation.  When we return from spring break we will be preparing for the CST and we will be working on our geo-cities project!

this week we started learning about circumference and area of circles.  these are the first lessons that get us excited about the magical irrational number called pi.  we used our smartboard to draw and measure diameters to calculate circumference and area.  drawing perfect circles are so easy on the smart board, we never had to worry that our circles would look like "Eggs!" once we learn our area of circles to the best of our ability we will then be able to calculate the area of cylinders.  Once we can do that, we will begin construction on our "geo cities project." we are all looking forward to our trimester 3 project, pictures will be posted on our website before the trimester finishes!  geometry is fun! :)

march is an exciting time for the superhero learners because it marks the last 1/3 of the school year!  we only need one more trimester before we become 7th graders!  exciting news!  this trimester has us starting geometry standards with complimentary and supplementary angles.  we used our smart board to help us measure and visualize the angles and their degree measurements.  it was fun to enlarge the protractor to measure the various angles that were in the notebook lesson.  this trimester will bring a project that will involve taking those angle and shapes and applying them to a geographical city! fun times a

today is career day and the superhero learners were able to experience a variety of guest speakers in our classroom.  they were able to utilize our classroom smart board to teach us about their careers and what made them so special to each individual speaker.  we heard from directv, the El Segundo Police Department, and the beyond 21st century beauty academy.  it was a busy day, but we enjoyed all of the new knowledge we were able to gain from our guests!

this is going to be an exciting week for all of us at los alisos.  our school counselor has planned an amazing week for us.  we are going to learn about different colleges and universities that we can attend when we finish high school. this week she asked us to make college pennants to hang up in the mpr.  we made the pennants in the computer lab and looked up fun facts on our assigned university/college.  we were able to search on the browser of our choice to complete this fun research assignment.  mrs. van lant was happy with our completed projects! way to go superhero learners!

LAst Friday and today has been all about our benchmarks. friday was math and today is language arts.  we have passed the half way point of the school year and are looking forward to what's ahead for the second half.  our new celt class has been learning how to use google drive for the first time and how to create a document.  our next project will be making spreadsheets, charts, and writing data analysis paragraphs.  google drive is a lot of fun to use to make projects come to life!
